UNION-TRIBUNE EDITORIAL

Rx marijuana

August 2, 2008

We have long argued that the whole idea of "medical marijuana" is a contradiction in terms. Such use is not based on science and there are numerous other – and better – alternatives to treat pain, the discomfort of cancer treatments and other health conditions. And the county Board of Supervisors has fought the good fight in resisting implementation of a state law requiring counties to issue official identification cards to qualified medical marijuana patients. But the county has now lost two court decisions in the battle, including a 4th District Court of Appeal ruling this week that the county has no legal authority to resist the ID program. Given the likelihood of another loss, further appeal to the state Supreme Court is not worth the cost. It it time for the county to honor the rule of law. There are better ways to fight this fight.
