Note from Lanny regarding Riverside
What a great meeting was held in Riverside yesterday - 87 people in attendance and just about
everyone was enthusiastic about our program to get the Riverside and San Bernardino Counties
to direct their Planning Departments to draft ordinances to allow for the operation of coops and
collectives in the counties' unincorporated areas. Almost everyone's hands went up when we asked
who would join in the program and from the number of names in the sign up book, it's looking good.
The enthusiasm will continue at this Saturday, June 6 MAPP meeting in Palm Springs. If we are to
get collectives located everywhere in the Inland Empire and not just Palm Springs, this program
is essential. Although it is convenient for those in Palm Springs, it is not for those in
Ontario, Lake Elsinore or even Indio.
Of special interest will be an update on the Riverside County Sheriff's "working group" to draft
a ne w policy memorandum to on how an officer will recognize a legal patient and collective and
as a consequence not affect an arrest. This is stalled for some unknown reason and we will be
discussing what we might be able to do to "unstall" it.
The Palm Springs ordinance will be discussed as well. The application period comes to an end on
July 3 and we will bring up to date on the application process and what is expected to happen
after it goes into effect. Not everyone is happy with the ordinance and some challenges are
expected.
The Palm Springs/Coachella Valley meeting takes place this Saturday, June 6 beginning at 3 p.m.
at 266 N. Palm Canyon in downtown Palm Springs next door to Crystal Fantasy. Because of the
planning for Riverside County actions, it is an important meeting.
HEMET BAN TO BE VOTED ON TUESDAY, JUNE 9 at 1 p.m.
The city of Hemet will be taking a final vote on their proposed mmj collective ban this Tuesday,
June 9. Once again patients and advocates will be there to remind that their vote to enact the
ban is illegal in light of the rejection by the U.S. Supreme Court of the SB/SD lawsuit. They
are now required to enforce state law and state law states that collectives and coops are be
permitted under state law and all actions by local governments must be "consistent" with state
law. Regulating collectives is consistent - banning them is not and is both a violation of state
law and the oath they took to uphold the California Constitution.
If you can make it to Hemet and testify during the public comment section, you are strongly
encouraged to do so. The Hemet City Council meets this Tuesday, June 9 beginning at 1 p.m.
The public comment section is usually near the beginning so don't be too late. The Hemet City
Council meets in the Council Chambers at Hemet City Hall located at 450 E. Latham Ave. in
Hemet 92543.
That's it for now. Real progress is now at hand - will you lend a hand to make it happen.
